In unsaturated polyester resins, UPE, for gel coats: Evonik silica are used as thickener. AEROSIL® guarantees perfect rheology control for the desired viscosity and thixotropy effect. Silica also serve as antisedimentation agent.

Silica from Evonik: Perfect thickening agents for unsaturated polyester resins (UPE)

Silica from Evonik enables you to process unsaturated polyester resins in the best possible way. Our silica guarantee effective thickening and adjust the thixotropy of the resins perfectly.

Unsaturated polyester resins are components of many glass-fiber reinforced plastic objects, such as tanks and containers, boat hulls or swimming pools. Unreinforced resins are also found in many applications, such as artificial marble, buttons and filling compounds. Manufacturing products like these requires an effective thickening agent: fumed silica from Evonik. Our silica help control the viscosity of unsaturated polyester resins and attain the desired thixotropy effect, so that the resins can be processed perfectly.

But fumed silica from Evonik can do even more: Even small amounts of silica prevent solid materials, such as pigments and fillers, from settling in the resin. And our silica also prevent bubbles from forming in gel coats applied using airless spray guns. Together, precipitated silica (SIPERNAT® specialty silica) and fumed silica (AEROSIL®) significantly reduce the porosity created through air inclusions during the spraying process. All this is possible with our wide range of silica products. Our experienced technical customer service will support you in selecting the right silica for your application.

Benefits of silica from Evonik for unsaturated polyester resins

  • Optimal rheology control for desired viscosity
  • Thixotropic behavior: The gel-like resin becomes thinner when sheared and is easy to process
  • Fumed silica prevents solids from settling in the resin
